Just wrote a review of this issue for the Bendis Board on “What is a ‘perfect’ comic?”
Uncanny X-Men #107 - 1977
You open the first page and BOOM full page team shot of the X-Men and one of them makes a remark saying “Where are we?” Neither the team in the book nor you have any idea what’s going on. You’re in this ride together.
Second page…BOOM double page spread. The X-Men are stuck in a corner while the rest of the pages shows crazy looking aliens and humanoid type of creatures (Imperial Guard), and what’s that? Those aliens are calling the X-Men “aliens!” That’s ridiculous!
What in hell’s name is going on? Let find out together.
We find out the X-Men are here to save Prof X’s girlfriend Lilandra. The Imperial Guard are none too pleased and an all out battle begins. It’s brutal and vicious. Wolverine gets burned alive and since his clothes are burnt off, he kills a member of the Imperial Guard and dons their costume. Holy shit, what a badass.
There are just too many imperial guard members and the X-Men start going down when all of a sudden, BOOM, full page spread…Starjammers. Holy shit, who is that cat lady and why am I attracted to a furry.
D’Ken then starts powering up the M’Kraan crystal and shit starts REALLY going down.
Things keep going downhill though and we shoot back to earth to the Fantastic Four detecting a bunch of ridiculous energy and they discover that if it continues…the universe will surely END!
We see this fight rehashed in Uncanny X-Men #137 (death of Jean Grey/end of Dark Phoenix Saga), but this is one of the earliest X-Men memories I have as a kid (reading some reprint that probably came with an action figure) and it just made me an x-junkie for life.
